Sonya Williams was born in Moscow, Russia, and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1994, with refugee status. She received her undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University in Psychology and English in 2012. In 2014, she received her Masters in Social Work from the University at North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she concentrated on working with children and adolescents. Sonya is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker; fluent in Russian and moderate proficiency in Spanish.

Sonya’s background and training in art, creative writing and play therapy are important components of her therapy work with her clients. She strongly believes that non-verbal forms of creative expression are powerful clinical tools. They can enhance the therapeutic experience, build self-confidence and provide powerful insight to the client.

Sonya’s experiences as an immigrant have strongly influenced her work as a therapist. Some of her areas of expertise include: war-related trauma, sexual, emotional and physical abuse, deportation/family separation issues, and traumatic accidents/medical problems. Sonya’s past work experiences include: co-leading art therapy groups for Burmese refugees, adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and Exceptional Children. Sonya has worked in a variety of settings, including schools, day treatment, community, and outpatient therapy centers. Sonya has an person-centered approach to therapy, addressing the individual’s unique needs and incorporating her wide knowledge of evidence-based practices, including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Second Step Early Learning Program, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Play Therapy, Progressive Counting, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
