Heather was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she has dedicated her life’s work to helping local children and families. Heather attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she double majored in English and Education prior to becoming a high school English teacher. During her first five years teaching, Heather earned a master’s in British Literature with a minor in Biology through CEUs and training provided by NCDPI. She later returned to school at North Carolina State University, earning a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. After teaching for 16 years, Heather returned to graduate school once more to earn a master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Heather has personally experienced and empathizes with the challenges of divorce, remarriage, and blending families. She is mother to seven living children between the ages of six and twenty-one: three biological, three adopted, and one as a foster parent; and she has lost five babies to miscarriages. To help other parents find healing from disenfranchised grief, Heather volunteers her time to support Saying Goodbye—an international organization that helps to support families who have lost babies to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant loss.

Working primarily with children, families, and couples, Heather specializes in behavioral and educational concerns, and mood disorders; and she works with parents to address issues in the home by improving their parenting, coping, and communication skills. She uses a variety of approaches in therapy, including play and art therapies, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Her work with clients is always person-centered and trauma-informed.
