Dr. David Cunha was born in Cheverly, Maryland and raised in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Since 1987, David has resided in the Triad area and earned his Bachelors of Arts in Religion from Elon University. David pursued a Masters Degree in Divinity from Duke University and a Doctorate of Ministry (D.Min) in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana. His education included training in Kleinian based psychotherapy as well as Family Systems based therapy. In 2011, David became a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS). Then in 2013, David earned a specialized certification in working with sex offenders (CCSOTS) from the National Association of Forensic Counselors. His current continuing educational focus is with studies of psychodrama therapeutic techniques.

David believes that everyone is capable of healing and uses his background in spirituality to enhance the therapeutic alliance with those who struggle with varying addictions and the families who care for them. David’s specialized training in substance abuse, addiction issues, and sexual compulsion developed him into a well-rounded therapist with an even wider range in clientele. David prides himself on the assessment process and accurately identifying the addiction or compulsion whether it be substance abuse related, sexual or other form of addictive behaviors such as, emotional eating, technological, attachment addictions, etc. After the assessment process, David’s experiences and training provide him with the ability to help clients set goals and work through these problems with great success.

If you struggle personally with anxiety that makes functioning in daily life much more difficult, David can help you individually to find successful ways that you can work through these anxieties and maybe never realized before. David offers adults and children trauma focus therapy of progressive counting through recent training completion through Child Trauma Institute.

David’s experiences are not just limited to the traditional counseling setting. His career began as a pastor of congregations (15 years exp) as he offered guidance towards healing for those who struggle with crises of faith and disappointments by and through religious experiences of all kinds. David continues to understand himself uniquely in this manner. His experience past and present assists persons either, who have a strong conviction of faith or who operate anywhere on the range or spectrum of faith, belief, or spirituality. Especially in our ever-changing world of values and opinions, David is excited and well prepared to assist you whomever you are, however you understand yourself and/or your beliefs, whether you are a person of great faith, medium faith, small faith, no faith, or no interest in faith.
